Who We Are
SOWcoders USA is a chapter of the international organization Society of Women coders. It is a chapter founded in the US that is run by head founder, Priya Sinha, and assistant founder, Alyssa Puskarz. The goal of this chapter is to help girls in developing areas of the US explore STEM fields and learn basic coding. We fundraise for those who are under-resourced and hope to make our community a better place!

Future Coders Without Barriers!
Our free five-session virtual camp taught girls and those who are nonbinary from all parts of the world how to craft an HTML/CSS website from scratch. With over 50 participants, students got to choose a topic and research it to create their final website from our curriculum. They were also able to hear from professionals about their experiences and challenges in the Computer Science field as women!
Secret Snowflake
With our organization’s mission always in mind, we strive to find new strategies for dealing with this challenge. Our first project became Secret Secret, where students were able to send thoughtful and caring messages to each other. It was a school-wide initiative and we raised around $250+ for the organization!
Teaching Coding
When SOWcoders USA was first established, we wanted to teach girls coding and help them with their education. Knowing that we didn't know a lot about coding, it became our mission to take college classes and learn more about it so we can teach others who don't have those classes at their school offered to them. Now, we are teaching girls HTML/CSS and they will be making a website based on an issue they find interesting in society!
Hartford, CT
Hartford has one of the largest proportions of people with less than a high school diploma (33.2%). Hartford’s population is mainly made up of Black, Hispanic, or Latino people. Hartford has started implementing STEM/STEAM schools in their district however most families don’t have the money to send them off to these schools. They could surely use our help by getting young women involved and offering free coding classes in public schools.
How we can help
We plan to locate a specific school in Hartford and teach coding lessons to young girls for free. Hopefully, this can be done in person with the help of our club members and volunteers as directed by the founders.
