Our Story

All our lives, we've wanted to learn to code but never had the chance to. It wasn't until high school that we were given the chance to explore this area of interest. Knowing that we are fortunate enough to have these classes given to us, we wanted to use our resources and help those around us explore such an amazing field. With all the stigma and challenges girls have to face in the science realm, we decided to get into contact with the Society of Women Coders organization and make our own impact in the US. Today we have the only US chapter, but our impact has inspired many to pursue the wonderful field of computer science!

Hi! I’m Priya Sinha and I’m one of the Ambassadors for Society of Women Coders and the Head Founder/President of Society of Women Coders (SOWCoders) club at Hall High School. All my life, opportunities weren't just handed to me. I had to create my own as I came from a first-generation family that had obstacles to deal with. I am grateful enough to even had the ability to make my own opportunities but I know there are girls out there that don't have that chance. At the end of my freshman year, I started to notice these problems on the news, and with COVID-19, more and more obstacles were thrown at young girls my age and their education. I did some research and came across an organization called Society of Women coders. Their mission was to help girls in developing countries achieve the resources they need to explore STEM fields. However, the US wasn't a developing country as it was far from one. But I knew there were developing areas of the country that needed help, especially our local nearby community so I reached out and got into contact with the organization. With the help of my two friends, Alyssa Puskarz and Charlotte Mullin, we started the first SOWcoders chapter in the US! As for Alyssa and I, we became global coding ambassadors for the organization speaking for the girls in the US who are overlooked.

Alyssa Puskarz
Assistant founder

Hello! I’m Alyssa Puskarz and I’m one of the Ambassadors for Society of Women Coders and the Assistant Founder of Society of Women Coders (SOWCoders) club at Hall High School. I became an Ambassador when my friend and other club Ambassador, Priya Sinha, approached me. After learning about SOWCoders and their mission to bring STEM opportunities to developing areas, I was very excited to be a part of such a helpful and hardworking community. I had always had an interest in coding, but I never knew where to start, and this program was the perfect place to begin. Even though I’m still new to coding, this club has provided me with the perfect place to learn. By helping start this club, I have been able to gain exposure and experience about the world I live in. I want to help anyone I am able to, and by using my position, I am proud to say that I bring help to those looking to further their careers. I am very excited to see what the future of this chapter holds!

Why is our goal important?

When many think of the US, they think of a country flourished with educational opportunities and jobs. A place filled with hope for everyone. However, there are so many girls in the US need help with their education. STEM is a field that is dominated by white males and unequal pay. It is hard for women, especially from minorities to find a voice in this area, so we want to help girls become their best selves. Although we are still learning ourselves, we want to go on a learning journey with them and help raise all of our voices.
